The Vacation Rental Owner's Guide to Upsells: 15 Ideas to Boost Revenue Per Booking

Last updated: March 2026
The fastest way to earn more from your vacation rental isn't more bookings — it's more revenue from the bookings you already have. A guest who has decided to stay with you has also decided to spend on their trip. Upsells simply let them spend part of that budget with you instead of with a stranger they find on Google after they arrive.
Done well, upsells lift your revenue per booking, improve the guest experience, and often earn you a better review. Below are 15 ideas grouped by the stage of the stay, each with a rough European price range so you can position them sensibly. At the end, we'll cover the part most owners get wrong: how to actually sell them at checkout instead of over WhatsApp at midnight.
Arrival upsells: start the stay right
The moment of arrival is when guests are most tired, most disorientated, and most willing to pay for anything that makes life easier. These four sell themselves.
- Airport or station transfer. A pre-arranged private pickup after a long flight is worth a lot to a family with luggage. Depending on distance and city, expect to charge anywhere from a modest fixed fee for a nearby airport to a premium for longer transfers. Partner with a local driver and keep a margin on top.
- Grocery pre-stocking. A fridge with milk, coffee, eggs, water, and a bottle of wine waiting on arrival is pure relief. Charge the cost of the shop plus a service fee — guests happily pay for not having to find a supermarket at 11pm.
- Welcome pack. Local products — olive oil, wine, cheese, pastries, artisan coffee — presented as a curated basket. A small hamper carries a healthy markup and sets an instant tone of quality.
- Early check-in. The simplest upsell of all: let guests drop bags or move in early for a modest fee, when your cleaning schedule allows. Near-zero cost, near-pure margin.
During-the-stay upsells: comfort and convenience
Once guests are settled, the goal shifts from relief to enjoyment. These add real value to the days in between and tend to have the highest margins.
- Bike or e-bike rental. Bikes delivered to the door for the length of the stay. E-bikes command a clear premium and are hugely popular in coastal and rural arens. Source them from a local rental shop and add your margin per day.
- Activity and excursion booking. Boat trips, kayaking, surf lessons, ski passes, theme-park tickets. You don't run these — you resell them, earning a commission from the operator or a small booking fee from the guest. Zero inventory risk.
- Private chef or in-home dining. A local cook prepares a paella, a barbecue, or a tasting menu in your kitchen. A memorable, high-ticket extra; price it per person and keep a booking margin over the chef's fee.
- Mid-stay cleaning or fresh linens. For stays longer than a few nights, an optional refresh is genuinely useful. Charge the cleaner's rate plus a coordination fee — a low-effort, recurring win on longer bookings.
Departure upsells: the easy final yes
Guests underestimate how much the last day matters. A stressful checkout can undo a great week. These three remove that friction — and they're some of the easiest yeses you'll get.
- Late checkout. The mirror image of early check-in and just as profitable. An extra few hours before an evening flight is worth a modest fee to almost any guest, and costs you nothing when the next booking allows it.
- Luggage storage. Let departing guests leave bags for the afternoon after checkout. A small flat fee for something that costs you only a corner of a cupboard.
- Departure transfer. The same private driver who picked them up takes them back to the airport. Guests who bought the arrival transfer will almost always add the return — offer it as a round-trip bundle.

Experience upsells: memories worth paying for
These are the highest-value upsells of all, because guests aren't paying for convenience — they're paying for the reason they travelled. They also position you as a local expert, which is exactly what earns five-star reviews.
- Wine or local-produce tasting. A visit to a nearby vineyard, or a tasting set up at the property. In wine regions this is a signature experience; price it per person with a comfortable margin over the producer's rate.
- Guided tour. A private local guide for a half-day walk through the old town, a hike, or a food tour. High perceived value, and you simply resell a trusted guide's time.
- Cooking class. A hands-on session — pasta, tapas, regional specialities — hosted at the property or a local kitchen. Popular with couples and families, and a strong per-person ticket.
- Spa, massage, or wellness at home. An in-home massage or a booking at a nearby spa. A gentle luxury guests rarely arrange themselves; charge per session over the therapist's fee.
How to sell upsells at checkout
Here's where most owners leave money on the table. They keep their extras in a welcome book, or wait for the guest to ask — so most never get bought. The single biggest change you can make is to present upsells at the moment of booking, when the guest is already in a spending mindset and reaching for their card.
The mechanics matter. Offer each extra as a clear add-on with a photo, a short description, and a price. Let guests select quantities where relevant — two bikes, four tasting spots — and add it all to the same payment. No back-and-forth, no separate invoice, no chasing. A guest who sees "Add a welcome hamper — €35" during checkout is far more likely to say yes than one who has to email you for it three days before arrival.
With Zobooq, extras are built into the booking engine. You create each upsell once — name, description, photo, price, per-night or per-stay — and it appears automatically at checkout on your direct-booking website. Guests add extras in a couple of taps and pay for everything at once through secure Stripe payments, so the revenue lands with the booking. It's all included for €29.95/month on the Pro plan, with zero commissions on every direct booking and every extra you sell.
